Avocado Toast with Tips and Variations

Who doesn’t like avocado toast! Not only is it healthy, insanely quick to make, it’s also absolutely delicious!

Don’t let anyone tell you how to prepare your avocados and find what works for you. Some prefer avocado mash to be perfectly smooth, I prefer it to be chunky.

Put whatever you like on your avocado toast. Plain avocado toast is never boring, considering the amazing textural balance between the creamy avocado and well-toasted crunchy bread. But don’t be afraid to get creative! My personal favourite is smoked salmon, capers, onions and a poached egg.

If you add onions, be sure to soak them in cold water for at least 10 minutes, then drain before adding to the toast. This will retain their crunch, but take their pungency away.

Make your avocado toast right before serving. Don’t make it ahead. Remember, avocado exposed to air for too long will start browning! So make it and eat it!

Last thing, under no circumstances mash the avocado right on the toast. This will make the bread soggy and less crunchy, ruining that perfect textural contrast.

Enjoy!

So many variations! Find the one that works for you! I love serving my avocado toast with my creamy, nutritious smoothie!

DifficultyBeginner

The suggested serving size in this recipe is 1 toast per person. Avocado toast is delicious and healthy, however, it's not low in calories. An average avocado is around 320 calories while each slice of bread is around 120 calories. Having said that, I'm often guilty of eating both of these delicious avocado toasts myself!

avocado toast

Yields2 Servings

 2 slices of bread
1 avocado, ripe but not overly ripe
koshaer salt and freshly ground black pepper
 olive oil, for drizzling, optional
Optional garnishes, variations: poached egg, smoked salmon, jalapenos, white onions, tomatoes, cilantro, parsley, radishes, etc.
Optioanl squeeze of lime or lemon juice. I don't personally add it, but feel free to add according to taste.

1

Mash avocado in the bowl to your desired consistency with a healthy pinch of kosher salt. Some prefer this mash to be perfectly smooth and creamy. Personally, I like mine chunky.

2

Toast the bread really well (be sure not to burn it.) Well toasted bread not only provides good support for all your toppings of choice, it also creates a perfect contrast between crisp bread and creamy avocado.

3

Spread you avocado mash on top of the toast, drizzle with some olive oil, if using, and season with coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper. Enjoy.

For Variations:
4

If using white onions, soak them for 10 minutes in cold water. Then drain before adding to the toast. This will help them retain plenty of crunch, but take away their unpleasant pungency.

Use any of the suggested variations to top the avocado toast we made in step 3. Simple jalapenos and onions are always a nice addition. Jalapenos, onions, tomato and cilantro is my favourite vegetarian variation. Radishes provide an exceptional textural contrast.

Put an egg on it! The runny egg yolk creates a wonderful sauce for the toast.

My personal favourite variation is smoked salmon, onion, capers and soft/medium poached egg.
