Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1/2 onion, diced

  • 2 TBSP tomato paste

  • 2/3 cup water

  • Garnishes of choice such as lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, avocado/guacamole, salsa, etc

  • Taco Seasoning:
  • 1.5 TBSP chili powder

  • 1 1/2 tsp cumin

  • 1/2 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (or less for less spice)

  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp sugar

  • 1 tsp kosher salt, and more to taste

Directions

  • Cook the beef and onions over medium high heat until the beef is browned and no longer pink. Drain the fat. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
  • Season with the taco seasoning and tomato paste. Cook for about 2 minutes to toast the spices and cook off the raw taste of tomato paste.
  • Add water, bring to simmer and simmer uncovered for about 2-3 minutes until the sauce is thickened. Taste to adjust seasoning.
  • In the meantime, bake your taco shells in preheated 325F oven. About 6 minutes for hard shells and 8 minutes for soft shells stacked on top of each other and wrapped in foil.
  • Serve with your garnishes of choice.
